7 Common Solar Panel Myths That Are Costing UK Homeowners Money

From "they don't work in the UK" to "you need a south-facing roof," we debunk the most persistent solar panel myths with real data.

Solar panels have been around for decades, but the myths about them are remarkably persistent. Some of these misconceptions are genuinely costing people money by putting them off a solid investment.

Myth 1: "Solar panels don't work in the UK - not enough sun"

Germany generates more solar electricity than any other European country except Spain and Italy. The UK gets similar sunlight to Germany's northern regions. A 4kW system in Manchester produces around 3,400 kWh per year. In Brighton, closer to 4,000 kWh. Solar panels work on daylight, not direct sunshine. Even overcast days generate 10-25% of peak capacity.

Myth 2: "You need a south-facing roof"

South-facing is optimal, but east and west-facing roofs lose only about 15-20%. That's the difference between a 9-year and an 11-year payback. East-west split systems are increasingly popular because they generate more evenly across the day, matching typical household consumption patterns better. Only north-facing genuinely doesn't work.

Myth 3: "Solar panels damage your roof"

MCS-certified installers use mounting systems specifically designed to protect your roof. The brackets attach to rafters, are weatherproofed, and the panels actually protect the tiles underneath from weather exposure.

Myth 4: "The technology will be much better if I wait"

Panel efficiency has plateaued at around 20-22% for standard panels. Laboratory cells hit higher numbers, but those advances take 10-15 years to reach consumers. Meanwhile, every year you wait is a year of savings missed. At current prices, a 4kW system saves roughly £800-950 per year. Waiting two years for 2% more efficiency costs you £1,800 in lost savings.

Myth 5: "Solar panels require constant maintenance"

Annual maintenance consists of almost nothing. Rain keeps them clean in most of the UK. There are no moving parts. Inverters may need replacing once during the panels' lifetime, but modern ones carry 20-25 year warranties.

Myth 6: "You can't get solar in a conservation area"

Solar panels are classified as permitted development in most cases. Conservation areas have some additional requirements, but approval rates are high. Your installer can check this during the survey.

Myth 7: "Solar panels make your house harder to sell"

Research from Rightmove and the Energy Saving Trust suggests the opposite. Homes with solar panels sell for 1-2% more on average and spend less time on the market.

The one thing that's actually true

The biggest variable isn't the panels, weather, or roof angle. It's which installer you choose and how much you pay. Prices vary by up to 40% for identical systems. Compare quotes from at least three MCS-certified installers and you'll save real money.
